Although Google+ was all the rage only a few months ago, the much hyped social media site has all but vanished from our lives. When was the last time you had a conversation at the water cooler about Google+? If you were an early adopter of Google+, when was the last time you logged onto your account? Chances are, you've used Facebook much more recently.

According to 89n, Google+ public postings have decreased by over 40% in the period from August 19 to September 14. Although this survey is less than scientific, and only refers to public posts, it does describe the overall attitude towards the fledgling social media site.

With all the star power of Google, what happened? Google+ certainly had the momentum to become a social media megalith with all of its early media attention. As the summer months eroded into fall, however, Google+ attention has also waned. Why isn't Google+ a successful social media site?

This infographic sheds more light on the Google+ situation. According to IdentifyMe, 78% of Google+ users are male, and Engineering, Software Engineering, and Developing are the most popular professions. While Google+ has successfully captured an audience of tech-savvy innovators, it has yet to become popular with the general public. It has failed to become a service that is relevant to the masses.

Why? Well, Google+ has failed to capitalize on the heard mentality of the general public. Essentially, many are saying that if their friends switched to Google+, they would too make the transition. The trick for Google+ to make its service mainstream is to broaden its appeal to market to those that are not in the technology sector, and hope that if a few come, the rest will follow.
