Web application developmentThis whole website/Internet deal became popular during the early 1990s. Unfortunately, many of the fonts used on today's websites were born, bred, and overused way back then. If you are in the middle of web application development and find yourself using one of these has-beens, stop! Find a modern alternative The world has seen too much of these already ...

1. Arial

Arial is the epitome of the lazy man's font. Arial had already been overused 30 years ago. It was invented as a way to avoid paying the royalties that were necessary for using Helvetica, but while Helvetica managed to retain a certain timeless beauty, Arial was changed just enough (to avoid licensing problems) to become ugly. Ugly plus overused equals "don't use that in your web application development." As alternatives try:
  • Going back to Helvetica!
  • Dangy
  • Armitage
  • Proxima Nova
  • FF Din
  • Museo Sans

2. Times New Roman

Web application development
Unless you're a high school student with a term paper due in six hours or fewer, Times New Roman shouldn't even be listed among your commonly-used fonts. It looks exactly like every other web application development project rolled out in the past 35 years, so it doesn't make your design stand out or get noticed in any way. Honestly, it just looks like you were too lazy to try harder. Times New Roman is a serif font, so try using another serif alternative like:
  • Roboto Slab
  • Lora
Or, modernize it even more with a sans-serif font like:
  • Roboto
  • Bebas Neue
  • Futura
  • Lato

3. Courier and/or Courier New

Web application development

Courier New was created as a retro font. As we all know, retro of retro is just another name for tired and outdated. Designed to look like old typewriter text, Courier fonts look like most any website in the 1990s. Courier fonts are called "monospace" fonts because there is an equal distance between the letters. Additionally, in some web application development settings, Courier fonts can actually be pretty difficult to read. Replace courier in your web application developments with a modernized monospace font like:
  • Consolas
  • Lucida Console
  • Monaco
  • Anonymous Pro
  • DejaVu Sans Mono
  • Dina
  • Droid Sans Mono
  • Inconsolata
  • Monofur
  • Proggy Clean
  • Triskweline
