Broken Glass Everywhere - What To Do When You Break Your Phones Screen

Written by Brian Geary | Jun 13, 2012 4:00:00 AM

A recent stroll down Main Street earlier this week took a turn for the worse. I was whistling my way down the sidewalk, sipping a nice cold Ice Coffee from Dunkin Donuts, when my phone started vibrating in my pocket. I quickly switched my ice coffee into my other hand and reached into my pocket to grab my phone. To my chagrin, the condensation from my Dunks Ice coffee left my fingertips slightly slippery, causing my phone to fly out of my hand to about eye level, twirling in a 'you can't catch me' manner and fall screen first to the concrete. Now, a similar scenario has occurred in the past (minus the dramatic details), leaving my phone slightly scratched and scuffed. But this time, as I turned my phone over, I saw small shards of glass trickling from the face of my phone. Crap.

As i turned it over, it looked like my phone survived a gun shot, with a bullet wound that barely passed the surface of the glass, leaving a spider web effect through one third of my screen. "****!" I exclaimed. So, what's a guy to do? I can't tote around a smashed up screen, especially seeing the company that I work for is a mobile development company! It doesn't look very professional to show a customer their brand new app on a broken phone. I could buy a new phone, but I love my phone. It's part of me. (HTC Trophy running Windows Phone 7.5) After a little research, I came up with a few ideas that could not only help me, but help others reading this blog.

Replace the screen (suggested for people that are handy)

This seemed like the most obvious choice. What do you do when you get a flat tire? Replace it! Same goes for Cell phone screens. You may need to be a little handy when it comes to electronics, but even an amateur like myself is able to make a repair like this.

1. Go to www.repairsuniverse.com This site has any phone part you can imagine but they specialize in screen repairs. Screen parts are rather cheap and very easy to find.

2. Go to Youtube and search for "Replace the screen on *yourphone*"

3. Follow the tutorial that is shown in the video and viola! Good as new.

WARNING: This will possibly void your phones warranty!

Check Ebay or Craigslist for a replacement (the easy way out)

Their are thousands of people (probably more) getting upgrades everyday on their cellphone, leaving their old phone to sit in a drawer and collect dust. This is your chance to cash in on their old junk. You can find a lot of deals on Ebay, and Craigslist can be a bargainers dream. Give it a shot and check it out!

Pay top dollar for a new one

Ugh. 500 dollars. No thanks.

Cool ways to rock a broken phone

Tell your friends your phone saved your life. It was in your front pocket and you got hit by a stray bullet.

It's actually not broken its just a cool wallpaper.

You went to the opera, the fat lady sang, and a broken screen was the outcome. (The opera is cool right?)
