Earlier this week, AndPlus' CEO Sean Mahoney had a chance to sit down with VC Editor for the Boston Business Journal Kyle Alspach, to discuss the types of projects AndPlus has been focusing on, where Sean sees the company going in the future, and a progressive move into the Boston market.
Boston Business Journal - AndPlus, a Worcester-based custom software development firm, is aiming to move its main office to Boston, Cambridge or Somerville in coming months, founder and CEO Sean Mahoney tells me.
Mahoney founded the company in 2006, after earning dual bachelor's degrees in electrical and computer engineering and a master's degree in information technology, all from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute .
Mahoney says the company has focused on mobile app development and design in recent years, amid surging demand for iPhone and other mobile devices. Among the clients for the bootstrapped firm is Allston-based Phantom Gourmet and the Worcester Sharks AHL team.
What’s a highlight about the business you could mention?
We’ve helped to develop a mobile website for a nationally-recognized horse racing organization, that has $1 billion of wagering going on across the system. They already had systems in place for betting, but we helped expand them into the iPhone markets. We helped to get it to a place where a lot of people could use it — 100,000 or 200,000 people at a time.
What work have you done for Phantom Gourmet?
We implemented a new web strategy for them, including a mobile site. We're discussing doing a mobile app for them in Q2. They have this excellent content on their site, great reviews, and they're looking to increase their overall footprint in social media. We're actually taking their entire web strategy, doing a new website for them as well, that's integrated into social media, and encourages and entices users to get free access to content. What is bringing you to the Boston area?
We’re looking to make our Boston office more production-focused, and there is a lot of talent in that area. Boston also has a lot to offer (for clients). On top of us now acquiring the Phantom Gourmet brand, we have a lot of great restaurants in our targets for our 2012 growth plans.
What size of staff will you have in the Boston office?
We’ll start with six, and then grow from there. We have a dozen people right now, and I expect to add another 12 this year. I do see most of my hiring coming out of Boston.
CEO, Sean Mahoney, said "It was truly a pleasure to speak with Mr. Alspach and we certainly appreciated the opportunity to be featured. We're doing some great things within our walls, and being recognized in the Boston Business Journal was an honor we were surprised and honored to receive."
